Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are the newest services we have added at Harbor Crest. I provide these services in addition to my counseling. My background and training can be reviewed by clicking on my name below or on the “Staff” button on the home page, and then my name.
Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy can be used to address a variety of difficulties. You have been in a similar state if you’ve driven a few miles while thinking about something only to realize you’ve driven a couple of exits past where you were or if you’ve been absorbed in a book or movie and had to reorient yourself to where you were reading because of your being “in the book or movie”. Hypnosis is helpful for:
Difficulties with Anxiety including Panic Attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Non-Specific (Generalized) Fears
Phobias including fear of flying, fear of bridges, fear of heights
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Addictions and Compulsions including smoking, gambling, eating and others
Eating Disorders including Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder
Weight loss or weight management including Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis
Insomnia- Difficulty falling asleep
Attention Deficit Disorder
Sexual Dysfunction and Barriers
Chronic Pain, migraines, difficulties with pregnancy
Academic Improvement (Memory improvement, decreasing/elimination of test anxiety
I am a skeptic when I see a product or service that lists a lot of diverse problems or difficulties that it cures. The list above is backed not only by my clinical experience but by that of numerous other psychologists and MD’s. For a number of the above it is essential to utilize other interventions concurrently to achieve success; some clients may need psychotherapy, medical intervention or other services in order to succeed. For example, when addressing chronic pain with a client I still want them to see their pain management or regular physician. The value of hypnosis in pain management (including anesthesia and surgery) is well documented, but the best treatment is from multiple directions; the physician addressing the pathology, while hypnosis helps address the symptoms. In other cases hypnosis cures both the underlying issue and symptoms. Each case is different. During the first session a personalized plan is developed for each client based on their specific difficulties and desires.
Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are effective and everyone can be hypnotized. The reason for this is that the level of hypnosis needed for our treatment is a medium depth of relaxation…..not being out cold! I work to have someone be very relaxed, a little deeper than that someone could achieve by guided imagery or meditation, but aware of what is going on around them. If a person in the middle of the session wanted to open their eyes and get up they could. Unlike stage hypnosis a client meeting with me retains their will in that they will not do something that is against their values. If I requested that they get up and give up all their money they would refuse to do so, but if I gave them strategies and tools to help make a needed change they will utilize it automatically.
What makes hypnosis a unique and great treatment method is that the relaxation feels good, it allows us to access the conscious and subconscious at the same time, and that post-hypnotic suggestions are acceptable and implemented by both the conscious and subconscious parts of the person. It is effective, solution-focused and a
